Host your Own Redundant RAID-Backed Cloud Storage Array

Upgrade from Local NAS to Dedicated Cloud Storage

The RemoteRails Appliance uses native Linux storage primitives including RAID (or ZFS) and Thick / Thin-Pool LVM as a resilient storage backing for Nextcloud across NVMe, SSD, and HDD volumes.

The Remote Communication & Collaboration Rails for your Office

Built for Hybrid & Remote Work

52% of remote-capable US employees work in a hybrid set up (both in-office and remote) and 26% of them work exclusively remotely (Gallup, 2026). Is the uplink of your office’s business broadband connection keeping up with the employees working from anywhere?

Traditional file servers and NAS made sense when the majority of employees worked on the LAN from the office. But dedicated solutions, such as a Nextcloud instance hosted in a professional data center, are far more suited for hybrid & remote work.

But how do you ensure the privacy & security of your proprietary data when employees are accessing it over untrusted networks, such as public Wi-Fi? The RemoteRails Appliance places Nextcloud behind a managed WireGuard VPN and OIDC SSO by Defguard – protecting your data no matter where it’s being accessed from.

See how RemoteRails leverages security features at every layer of the stack to provide encryption in-use, in-transit, and at-rest.

Enterprise File Sync & Share behind VPN and SSO

Box, Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft 365, & SharePoint Alternative

The Nextcloud instance integrated into the RemoteRails Appliance provides convenient file sync & share without compromising on data governance and privacy.

Office Co-Authoring without Telemetry

Unlike Google Docs, Microsoft 365, or the Adobe Document Cloud, your keystrokes are never sent to a third-party provider while you edit your documents online with Euro-Office. This safeguards sensitive, legally protected data and trade secrets from US-based providers.

Zero Per-Seat Licensing Costs

Only pay for what you use. Add an unlimited number of users up to the storage capacity of your dedicated server – at no additional cost. Don’t be locked into a Microsoft E3 license simply because you need to manage a user in your SSO.

Direct Filesystem Access for Admins

Stop worrying about API rate limits (Google or M365) or tiering (Box for Business) with direct filesystem access for admins. This simplifies data migrations and backups, since you can securely access the underlying Linux filesystem directly.

Native Desktop & Mobile Clients

Access your cloud-based drive from Windows, MacOS, and Linux devices as well as iOS and Android, using Nextcloud’s open source sync clients. The newly revamped Virtual Files capability allows browsing shares without syncing them to your local hard disk first.

WebDAV Integrations with Nextcloud

Use your Nextcloud storage with virtually any web, mobile, or desktop application which supports WebDAV. For example, Joplin, a free E2E encrypted note taking app, supports using the Nextcloud WebDAV endpoint for syncing across devices. KeePass archives can also be synced through WebDAV.

Integrated with Defguard SSO for OIDC

Exclusively in the RemoteRails Appliance, Nextcloud is integrated with the Defguard’s OIDC provider. This allows your users to use a single login for VPN access, Nextcloud, in addition to other sovereign applications such as Matrix chat, LiveKit calls, Stalwart e-mail, and password manager.

Use your Nextcloud storage with virtually any application which supports WebDAV. For example, Joplin, an E2EE note taking app, supports using Nextcloud WebDAV as its cloud-based storage.

1

Unmetered (Multi-) Gigabit Bandwidth

Upload bandwidth of 1 Gbps or better makes it less likely that your users will saturate your Nextcloud appliance’s upload bandwidth for sustained periods of time during peak usage; nor that you will be hit with an unexpected bandwidth bill. We recommend providers such as: ColoCrossing, Hivelocity, ReliableSite (US), Leaseweb, HostKey, OVHcloud (US/EU), FlokiNET, or Hetzner (EU/EEA) – depending on your budget, data residency, & security needs.

Since the RemoteRails Appliance provides voice & video conferencing through Matrix as well, provisioning a suitable amount of bandwidth is a particularly important consideration.

2

RAID 1, 6, or 10 Redundancy

RAID 1, 6, or 10 levels (or their equivalent RAIDZ levels in ZFS) ensure the resiliency of data even in the unlikely event of a hardware failure. RAID 1 or 10 mirrors are optimized for write performance, allowing for any disk in a drive pair to fail with zero data loss. RAID 6 calculates parity to protect against the failure of any 2 disks in an array of at least 4 disks, with 2/3 usable vs. raw capacity – but rebuilds are slower. For your security, we use S.M.A.R.T. monitoring and run stress tests to check disks for unrecoverable bad sectors prior to formatting your RAID arrays and deploying the appliance.

3

Cost-Optimized Storage Tiering

The RemoteRails Appliance can be adapted to use multi-drive arrays of NVMe, SSD, and HDD volumes in virtually any combination to align your data’s storage class to its business value. On hardware with NVMe / SSD storage, Nextcloud is configured to use that for the application layer and thumbnail generation, while leveraging voluminous HDD arrays for bulk data storage & archival.
